2 got nothing to say| we're coming over

[09 Sep 2004|06:36pm]

So the new record, Handbook for the Hopeless came out this past Tuesday, September 7, courtesy of Ferret. I have only listened to it through once, but is anyone else disappointed with it? It just doesn't seem to have the urgency as the previous record. Also, I haven't seen them in over a year, maybe even close to 2 years, so I don't know if I should have been expecting this. I just feel like something is missing.

I noticed somebody posted on the Break's message board about making a post here, but didn't do it, so I figured I'd do it.

Point in case, the Break has a message board now on their website, so you should check it out. It was kind of dead last time I looked, so sign up and talk some shit or something. Bye.

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted here, but now we actually have something to discuss.

As of today, it's been officially announced that The Break has signed to Ferret Records. Yes, you read that correctly... Ferret, home of Scarlet, Misery Signals, A Static Lullaby, Blood Has Been Shed, Zao, The Rise, Remembering Never, Boys Night Out, Every Time I Die and Zao, among others. The band will begin recording the new full length next month, and is expected to be released on August 1st of this year, according to the Ferret site.

Check out The Break artist page at the Ferret site here: The Break Ferret page

Also there's a tidbit about them in the news section of the same site.

Congrats to the boys! Considering the distribution that Ferret has, I can only imagine that the band is going to be promoted out the ass now.

can't believe i never thought to look for a break LJ community before.

words can't describe how much i love this music, so i won't even try. favourite song would have to be "wait for the wheel" tied with "empty."

does the band ever tour canada (specifically toronto)?

man this community is really dead lately. so uh.

the break is on tour in europe with strike anywhere right now. that's cool. john says there are no plans to play with them in the states though. which is uncool.

anyone got the split? it's pretty killer.

I just have to get a couple things off my chest. I saw this community and it pissed me off bad. But here's what I know about the Break:

They're not superstars. They're average guys who happen to be in a really good (in my opinion) band. They don't want fan clubs, they want friends. They would much rather you talk to your friend who DON'T listen to the Break about them than talk to each other about how great they are. That's what I presume to know. Sorry if it offends you. I'm not against a Break community. But really, gents, this is a fan club.

The Break/Let It Burn split and record release show: reviewed! [27 Jul 2003|10:56pm]

radioscam
I got the split CD on Friday at the record release show in New Brunswick. This is my brief review/rundown of the 3 new Break songs.

We Live Without Sleep: Anyone who is familar with John's old band, The Purpose, this song musically reminds me a lot of them. Fast, more of an old-school hardcore type of feel to it. I overheard someone at the show thinking it was a cover at first, being its different than the average Break song. While it is different for them, it's pretty awesome still. The lyrics are really REALLY well written too (you can get an mp3 and read the lyrics at the website).

Alone With You: Fairly mid-tempo, doesn't have the usual "kick" that I'm so used to in their songs. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, in fact it's pretty good, but I'd see this is my least favorite of the 3 Break tracks. Lyrically it seems to be a breakup song, but not a sappy breakup song, a breakup song with well written lyrics that you can actually relate to.

I Name You Disaster: The most reminiscant of the songs on the full length, pretty fast and poppy. If the first song wasn't so damn awesome, I'd say this is my favorite track but it's definitely a tossup between this one and the first. Haven't had time to attempt to decipher the lyrics in this one yet.

I also really like the new Let It Burn songs, even though a lot of people disagree with me.

Overall opinion: The new songs rock, and the split is good. The end.

Speaking of, they also played another new song at the record release titled "Ride the Snake", which sounded a lot like We Live Without Sleep, in other words fast and with an old-school hardcore type feel.

Other highlights of the record release show (which by the way, I attended the basement show, not the 21+ late night show):

- The ceiling being so low that John kept having to duck his head... I was counting how long it would take before he hit his head on something (him being so tall and whatnot), but surprisingly he didn't.
- The overhead lightbulb burnt out because Mike hit it with his guitar head, so The Break played in the dark for about 2 songs. Midway through the 3rd song, a guy dodged around Mike and changed the bulb.
- A video crew was there filming a segment on The Break, and they said they were also doing a piece on basement shows. They said this was going to be for a public access TV show to be aired in NJ sometime in coming months. They interviewed me and my friend for it, so I wonder if I'll be able to view this somehow... heh.
- This guy Pete, the guy who's house the show was held at (note: he's the former bassist of Revolution Summer) jokingly kept trying to rip John's shirt off during the set, to which John would get mad and button his shirt up whenever Pete would pull it open again. This occured through the entire set pretty much. It was funny.

Good show overall.

Random tidbits:

- Apparently when you peel the shrinkwrap off the new CD's, some of the blue on the cover comes off and it leaves white scratch marks. I personally think it looks kinda cool but the band is really upset by this and are going to have them sent back to the pressing plant.
- The Break have several new T-shirt designs, the most interesting being a picture of a leopard humping a rock. I kid you not.
5 got nothing to say| we're coming over

[29 Jun 2003|12:30am]

so last friday, june 20, the band i'm in opened for the break in rochester. however, the story is much more insane than that:

the break blew out two tires for their rv within 45 minutes time, and they were stuck outside of syracuse with no way to get to the show, so some kids in the other band that played drove an hour or so to go get them and their stuff and bring them to rochester. we said hello to them and stuff and they told us all about it and then they played for 40 minutes and out of the seven times i've seen them, it was one of their best sets.

so afterwards, they needed people to take their stuff back to this guy's house in rochester and to take some of them there, but john waverka and mike rummel needed someone to drive them into downtown rochester to pick up tires at this all night tire place and then drive them an hour or so to weedsport, and no one else could, so my friend john and i drove john waverka and mike rummel back to my house to get our van and then to this really sketchy area of rochester to get the tires and then to weedsport to get their rv. it was seriously such a long night, but those guys have always been so nice to us and i got home at 4 a.m. but the trip was totally worth it. i dunno. maybe it doesn't sound that entertaining, but john waverka is one of the funniest guys in the world, and mike rummel is so nice and the whole band is just awesome, and it's so cool to be able to say you're friends with the break and that they know you're name and stuff. those guys are seriously the nicest guys i have ever met and they are by far my favorite band. i can't wait to see them at hellfest.

I should have written this last week but I forgot.

The Break have finalized their lineup. Mike Rummel is back to playing guitar, and the new PERMANANT (thank god) drummer is Danny Windas.

Interesting facts about Danny:

- The boy just recently turned 18.
- He graduated from high school last week.

The fact that he's the new full time drummer for The Break amazes me by these facts alone. I haven't met him yet but he's a good drummer, and he sounds great with them.

I'm seeing them tonight at the North Six in Brooklyn, NY, and again next weekend at Hellfest.

Interviews [17 Jun 2003|12:00am]

So as you've probably been reading, I did an interview with John (and also a short tattoo questionare with Kevin) a couple of weeks ago. My friend and I are going to be doing a webzine but I figured I'd let you guys see the interviews before the site goes up (since we're not quite sure when that will be anyway). Hope you enjoy. By the way, the reason for the tattoo questions is because the site is going to have a section on body art and have a tattoo gallery of people's tattoos, including band members... as soon as I get a hold of someone with a digital camera, John and Kevin's tattoos will be up on the site. But here are the print interviews for now:

we're coming over

[03 Jun 2003|02:57am]

xthedudex
so it's late and i feel like talking about the break.

i saw the purpose play in rochester, new york in february of 2001 and later on heard they broke up, and then that september heard that someone from the purpose was now in this band called the break, and i was supposed to go see them play in rochester in late september but couldn't cuz of plans i could not get out of. so the first time i saw them was in the tiny back room of this record store in february of 2002 in rochester, and they were so awesome. then this band i was in for like three months opened for them in this kid's garage in rochester that may, and we talked to the guys and they were really cool. my friends and i decided to go see them two days later in syracuse, and we've been friends with those guys ever since. and just to show you how awesome these guys are, three of my friends and i went to see them in buffalo last july, and we got totally lost and got to the show and found out it was 18 and over, and the break guys had no idea and felt really bad, so john found a way for my friends, who were 17, to sneak in through the back, and i, being 18, went in through the front. then they stayed at my friend's house the night and we hung out with them all day on the fourth of july.

the break = best band and nicest dudes ever.

News and things o'plenty [23 May 2003|09:25pm]

radioscam
Lots of updates and stuff.

Firstly, you guys won't hear this anywhere else since the band's site won't be updated for a while, but here is the current situation with the lineup:

Mike Rummel has moved over from guitar to the drumkit, and they have a guy named Pukey (formerly of Revolution Summer and Heckle) filling out the 2nd guitar slot. I saw them play with this lineup at CBGB in NYC on Tuesday night and I must say they sound REALLY FUCKING GREAT. They aren't sure if this is permanant or not but this is how they'll be playing shows for the time being... so if you go see them anytime soon, no you're not seeing things, yes that's Mike playing drums and not guitar.

More news:

- The split CD with Let It Burn should be out in August.
- 3-week tour with Let It Burn in June, another 2-week tour after that, and little legs and weeks things until the fall. No shows the entire month of September because Mike's getting married to his girlfriend of 9 years (!!) that month. Then they're going to Europe after that.
- Playing some new songs live. New shit sounds really good.
- I interviewed John for the webzine my friends and I are working on, and I'll be doing another interview with Kevin tomorrow. As soon as the zine and interviews are up, I'll post the links for everyone.

And finally, if you ever decide to interview John, never do it by bathrooms... he's easily distracted.

More updates than you can shake a stick at [27 Apr 2003|08:28pm]

radioscam
Paraphrased news from the website:

The Break is now recording a split CD with Let It Burn from NJ (www.letitburnonline.com). They've recorded 3 songs already and go finish with the mixing and whatnot next month. They've got 2 shows in NYC and NJ booked for next month, and are going on tour for a few weeks in June. Mike is also in the process of re-doing their website yet again. So once the new site is up and they have their tour dates, I'll post those here.

No idea what's up with the drummer situation but I assume they've found one since they're starting to actively play shows again. I'll be at the Hoboken show on the 7th, so I'll find out what the deal is with that.

In the meantime, their dates for next month:

05.07.03
Maxwell's. Hoboken, NJ. 8:00 PM. $7.
w/ River City High, Schatzi

05.20.03
CBGB's. NY, NY. 8:00 PM. $9.
w/Fortunato, Merciana, This Day Forward

05.24.03
Hamilton St. Bound Brook, NJ. 1:00 PM. $8.
w/The Procedure, Nakatomi Plaza
